Bleed in printing

What is bleed in printing?

Bleed is an extra margin of 3 mm around your design. This ensures that no unwanted white edges appear after cutting due to slight shifts of the cutting machine.

How to use bleed in printing?

The use of bleeds is simple, but important for perfect functioning. Add 3mm to the size on all sides of your document. This means that if your horizontal print needs to be 210 x 297mm (A4 size), create your design at 216 x 303mm.

In programs like Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, you can easily set bleed when creating a new document. If you are using other design software, make sure to manually add 3 mm to all sides of your design.

Bleed 3 mm all around

Adding 3 mm bleed to all sides of your document is essential for a professional result. This allows background colors, images, and other design elements to extend to the edge of the paper without white edges appearing. Always remember to include this margin, especially for designs that need to be printed to the edge, such as flyers, business cards, and brochures.

What else should I keep in mind?

In addition to bleeding, a safety margin is important. Make sure that important elements such as text or logos are not too close to the edge of your design. Allow at least a 5mm safety margin from the cutting edge to avoid cutting off critical parts of your design. If your design includes a frame or border, make sure it is placed evenly and not too close to the cut edge.
